The British Touring Car Championship has been around since 1958. It is one of the most famous and contested championships in Europe along with the DTM. In 1997, a French car driven by a Swiss caused a sensation: Alain Menu's Renault Laguna. Vice-champion in 1994, 1995 and 1996, Menu finally won the top prize in 1997 after a near-perfect season.

It was, without doubt the best era for BTCC. Good old chavaliers, E36's, Alfas etc that looked pretty much the same as what you could buy in the show room! IIRC the Nissans and Laguna's were the only true 300hp+ n/a power units as well. the reverse head swindon c20xe in the cavs and vectras were over 300bhp too.
